We are all bio-psycho-social organisms. KEY #1 Biology: About 1/3 of weight issues are directly related to your biological predisposition, current physical status and or current conditional responses to external forces. KEY #2 Psychology: Weight all has emotional and psychological components. either your weight has effected your emotions or your emotions have contributed to your weight. Sometimes it is pretty hard to tell what came first. With hypnotherapy, little time is spent looking for the first cause, rather focus is given to the emotion directly. KEY #3 Social / Environment: In terms of order, social and psychological weight issues are often tied. That is to say that after you look at biology, we know that the next two become synonymous with one another. The weight story can go something like this (Just one possibility, there are many). Child is born to a middle class family, above poverty but well below upper class, life begins. Parent are pretty healthy, as are most of their ancestors. Ancestors have slowly shown to increase in weight with each new generation. Shift in weight began following the departure from farming in the 20's when they moved to inner city industrial labor. Prior to the 20's, former family members ate what they grew and traded for what they didn't grow. Following migration to the inner city, grocery stores replaced farming. As early as the 40's food manufactures began to experiment with food fillers, artificial sweeteners, flavor enhancers and stabilizers. Meanwhile social concepts of the female body shape are changing as well. Fresh foods where all but lost following the 50's when most folks wanted foods that could be stored over longer periods of time. Television replaces radio and the waist line shrinks even more. FDA is put in charge of the food regulation. FDA declares that food companies should regulate themselves. So, food companies have free reign to pretty much do as they please. Food and drug companies began huge advertising campaigns aimed at teaching and training an eager society on the consumer concepts, a new American dream and finally a idea about the new look. By the 60's weight was already becoming an issue. Materialism, unrealistic physical expectations and huge personal debit created a new stress that has grown exponentially ever since. Less than healthy food available every where, stress and anxiety at an all time high. Food additives designed to make you want more and more made emotional eating the cause for many overweight. Each generation training the next how to stress, how to eat and how to judge... This is just one possible glance at a problem that has more causes than cures. |
